and Now

Five years have passed since the unforgettable IQA World Cup in 2018, and Team Vietnam finds themselves presented with a second chance to showcase their skills on the international stage. As a team located far from the quidditch world’s central hubs, we have been deprived of opportunities to represent ourselves in national team tournaments throughout those years. However, after enduring the challenges brought by the pandemic, we are eager to make our mark once again.

Travelling to the other side of the globe for the World Cup in Richmond is not a feasible option for us this time. Fortunately, the Quadball Nations Cup is scheduled to take place in October. It is an opportunity we eagerly embrace. This tournament will serve as our platform to prove ourselves against 19 other formidable international teams.

Team Vietnam prepares to rebound with renewed determination and spirit. We know it is time for our long-lost brothers to reunite, coming together as a united force to showcase the strength and resilience that defines us as Vietnamese athletes.

In the face of geographical barriers and limited exposure to top-level competitions, our passion for the sport burns brighter than ever. We harness the setbacks of the past five years as motivation to push ourselves further, honing our skills and strategies. We know that this tournament will be our chance to remind the world of our capabilities.

Then

Once upon a time in Vietnam, we were a small but passionate community of quidditch enthusiasts. Despite having only two quidditch teams in the entire country, we dreamed of making a mark on the international stage. At that moment, Vietnam was far from eligible to form a National Governing Body (NGB) for quidditch, and our country’s name was barely known in the quidditch scene. Nevertheless, we, a group of determined individuals, set out to change that.

Led by our captain, Linh Nguyen, we worked tirelessly to secure the necessary funds and visas to send a team to the Quidditch World Cup 2018 in Italy. It was an uphill battle, considering our financial situation and the difficulties in obtaining visas for those of us who had rarely traveled abroad.

With the odds stacked against us, we refused to give up. We poured our efforts into making it work for the nine players coming from Vietnam and also reached out to Vietnamese individuals living all over the world, calling upon our shared heritage and love for the sport. In the end, Team Vietnam managed to assemble a squad of 18 players, each with Vietnamese origins but hailing from different corners of the globe.

As we arrived in Italy, we knew we were considered underdogs. We were predicted to rank last in our group, and many doubted our abilities. However, our spirits remained unyielding. We had come to prove ourselves and show the world what we were capable of.

Despite having only a few days to train and play together for the first time, we surprised everyone with our determination and skill. We fought fiercely on the quidditch pitch, refusing to back down against more experienced teams. Match after match, we poured our hearts into every game, showcasing our love for the sport and our tenacity as a team. The other countries began to take notice of our spirited Vietnamese squad, impressed by our resilience and dedication.

After the group stage, we had defied expectations. We had secured a spot in the upper bracket, surpassing several other countries in the rankings. It was a remarkable achievement for a team that had been seen as underdogs from the start.

Our success did not end there. In the subsequent matches, we continued to give our all, leaving a lasting impression on both players and spectators. Our chemistry and teamwork improved with each game, demonstrating our ability to adapt and learn quickly. When the tournament came to a close, we had achieved a remarkable feat. We finished in 15th place out of the 29 participating countries, making us the highest-ranked team from Asia. It was a proud moment for Vietnam and a testament to our unwavering dedication.

Our journey had not only put Vietnam on the quidditch map but had also inspired a new wave of interest in the sport within the country. Quidditch clubs began to sprout up across Vietnam, and more youngsters were drawn to the magic of the game. We returned home as heroes, having accomplished what many thought was impossible. Our story became an inspiration for aspiring quidditch players in Vietnam and around the world. We proved that with determination, unity, and a little bit of magic, dreams can become reality, even for the underdogs.

Our Name

The name that tells our story,
our origin,
and our spirit

Long Lost Army, for Vietnam we hail,
Reunited after years, our unity prevails.
A tribute to Lạc Long Quân, our legendary king
Whose strength and spirit within us bring.

Lạc, the name of our land in olden days,
Now translated to “lost” in a playful way.
Long, the oceanic dragon of our lore.
Quân, meaning “king” and “army” for more.

We are of dragon and fairy descent,
Lạc Long Quân’s legacy ever present.
Our emblem, the dragon of the sea,
Instills strength and courage endlessly.

Long Lost Army, we stand strong,
Together we rise, our journey long.
A name that unites, a story to unfold,
Our bond never fades, a story to be told.

Our Design

As our name is a word play on Lạc Long Quân, the legendary first king of Vietnam, our mascot is also his aquatic dragon! This unique and captivating dragon symbolizes the essence of Vietnam’s cultural heritage while standing out from Western and Chinese counterparts.

Inspired by Lạc Long Quân’s legacy, our Vietnamese Aquatic Dragon gracefully glides through water, its serpentine body adorned in shimmering scales inspired by Vietnam’s marine life. Unlike Western dragons with wings or Chinese dragons associated with fire, our dragon exudes an aquatic nature that sets it apart.

In addition to its distinctive features, our dragon represents the spirit of Lạc Long Quân, embodying his strength, wisdom, and protective qualities. It serves as a powerful symbol, guiding us on our creative journey and reminding us of Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.

With the Vietnamese Aquatic Dragon as our design mascot, we pay homage to Lạc Long Quân, honor Vietnam’s unique identity, and embrace the endless possibilities of creativity.

Our primary design showcases the Aquatic Dragon against a deep ocean blue backdrop, emphasizing the origin of our legendary king and serving as our prominent mascot. The incorporation of water wave elements further reinforces the connection to the vast ocean. With a distinct Asian style, the dragon captures attention, embellished with a pearl delicately clasped in its mouth.

A pinkish red hue dominates the dragon’s color, symbolizing the fairy blood of Mother Âu Cơ, adding depth and significance to our design. Drawing inspiration from Vietnam’s ancestral legends, we infuse a modern and sporty style into the design, ensuring its suitability for our jerseys and other products within our fundraising campaign collection.

The deep ocean blue backdrop signifies mystery and allure, while the dragon’s pinkish red hues exude a sense of enchantment and heritage. Combined, they create a visually compelling design that encompasses Vietnam’s rich cultural ancestry while resonating with contemporary tastes.

Our secondary design presents a captivating contrast to the primary, featuring the Aquatic Dragon against a vibrant shade of Viva Magenta. While retaining the dragon and water wave elements, this design highlights our ancestral ties to Mother Âu Cơ, known for her fairy origins in Vietnamese folklore.

In this version, the dragon’s body takes on an icy blue hue, symbolizing the snowy mountains from which Âu Cơ is said to have originated. This color choice accentuates the connection to our fairy ancestry.

Although using a similar palette to the primary design, the secondary design stands out as the other half of our collection, showcasing its brilliance and individuality. It serves as a vital component of our campaign, representing the duality within our Vietnamese heritage — the fusion of dragon ancestry and fairy origins.

The vibrant Viva Magenta backdrop and icy blue dragon body combine to create a visually captivating design, capturing the essence of our rich ancestral legends while complementing the overall collection.

Our exceptional artworks are brought to life by the immensely talented designer, Nguyet Anh Tran. Our one and only design genius has been an avid member of Hanoi Draco Dormiens, Asia’s longest-running quidditch club,  since its very first day.

For over 8 years, she has played for Hanoi Draco Dormiens in every possible tournament, including three Asian-Pacific Quidditch/Quadball Cups and three Vietnam Quidditch Cups. And for the same period of time, she has been the creative force behind Hanoi Draco Dormiens and Quidditch Vietnam in all major projects.

Her remarkable works encompassed logo creations and theme stylings for APQC 2017 and 2022, both organized by Hanoi Draco Dormiens. Her artworks have adorned the team’s as well as the tournaments’ merchandise and branding, receiving nothing less than massive compliments from both the event participants and international followers on media platforms.

Nguyet Anh is also the key designer behind the two fundraising campaigns for Team Vietnam prior to IQA World Cup 2018 and QNations’ Cup 2023. Following the notable success from the previous main theme of Lac bird and Vietnamese traditional bronze drums in 2018, her new design inspired by Lạc Long Quân’s aquatic dragon for Team Vietnam in 2023 now awaits the international quidditch community’s reception and acclaim.
